Team accepts Excellence in Construction Award

Larson-Danielson Construction was honored with 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards for two outstanding projects: the Grand Reading Room in South Bend, IN, and Drift on Pine in La Porte, IN.

These projects exemplify our commitment to quality, value, and excellence in construction. Here’s a closer look at each of these remarkable achievements.

The Grand Reading Room: A Beacon of Intellectual Pursuit

Our team was the general contractor for the Beth & Lou Holtz Family Grand Reading Room renovation project. The Grand Reading Room is in Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame and took home of the Excellence in Construction Awards in the interior category. The renovated space is now both functional and inspiring, designed to encourage focused intellectual pursuits and collaborative work.

The 20,000-square-foot, two-story space has over 250 table seats for individual study and seating around an enclosed fireplace. A new stairwell connects the first and second floors, improving accessibility and flow.

Furthermore, the Grand Reading Room is bathed in natural light, which creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. A 100-pendant light installation in the new atrium adds to the enchanting ambiance. In addition, walls of windows offer panoramic views of the west campus, including the Basilica spire and the Dome of the Main Building.

We are particularly proud of the Beth & Lou Holtz Family Grand Reading Room renovation. The project showcases our dedication to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Moreover, this iconic space will serve students and faculty for years to come.

We worked closely with university officials, architects, and subcontractor to ensure that every element of the renovation met the high standards of the University of Notre Dame. From the custom millwork to the state-of-the-art lighting, every detail was meticulously planned and executed.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. The Grand Reading Room is more than just a study space; it’s a place where ideas are born and knowledge is shared.

Drift on Pine: A Culinary and Architectural Gem

Drift on Pine showcases our expertise in structural contracting and took home one of the construction awards in the building category. The 8,000-square-foot restaurant was designed by our architectural partner, Facet Architecture.

This three-story restaurant and bar is a vibrant addition to La Porte, IN. Drift on Pine offers a unique dining experience with versatile spaces that cater to various occasions.

The restaurant offers family dining areas that create a welcoming atmosphere for gatherings. Additionally, a large patio with a cozy fire pit is perfect for cool evenings.

Two breathtaking rooftop areas and three distinctive bars offer magnificent views of Pine Lake. Each bar has its own charm.

First, the ground floor bar connects to an outdoor space overlooking Pine Lake. Patrons can enjoy several seating options and easy access to the bar without going inside.

Next, guests 21 and older can visit The Buoy, Drift’s second-floor bar. The Buoy has its own kitchen, outdoor balcony, and weather-resistant patio. When the weather is nice, the lake-facing windows fully open, providing a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

Finally, the rooftop bar offers patio space looking across both Pine Lake North and Pine Lake South. It’s the perfect place to unwind during the warmer months.

Drift on Pine promises an unforgettable experience. So, visit the restaurant to enjoy a meal with family or sip a cocktail with friends.

Tony Oss receives Life Saver Award

At Larson-Danielson Construction, we are guided by our core values, which include Leadership and Safety. We believe they must be at the heart of everything we do.

Our commitment to safety ensures that everyone on our job sites goes home to their families every day. Moreover, our leadership philosophy guides us to lead with vision, passion, humility, and by example.

These values not only guide our work ethic but also exemplify the character of our dedicated team members. An extraordinary example of this is our very own Anthony “Tony” Oss.

Tony is the director of pre-construction and design services for Larson-Danielson and Facet Architecture. In addition to his professional role, he serves as a linebackers coach for the La Porte High School Slicers football team. Beyond his impressive personal and professional commitments, Tony is a beacon of humanity and a true embodiment of our core values.

On Thursday, May 9, 2024, Tony was recognized at the 2024 CAF/NWIBRT Awards Banquet with a Life Saver Award. The award is a testament to his quick thinking, professional training, and selfless act of bravery, which resulted in saving a man’s life.

Leadership and Safety in action, Tony Oss receives Life Saver award

On July 18, 2023, while with the La Porte Slicers at Trine, Tony responded to a man in cardiac arrest, providing life-saving efforts that certainly made a difference. The man had a 100% blockage in his heart.

Thanks to Tony’s immediate response, alongside the athletic trainer for Trine and first responders in Angola, the man survived. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of first aid skills and the profound impact they can make.

On July 26, 2023, Tony was deservedly recognized for his courageous endeavor. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office awarded him a Letter of Commendation for his heroic, life-saving actions. We are thrilled to have a hero like Tony on our team. His actions are an inspiration to us all.

Our Values: Leadership and Safety

At Larson-Danielson, safety is more than just a priority — it is the heart of our culture. This incident serves as a stark reminder that our core value of safety extends beyond our job sites, and that everyone should consider learning first aid skills. Tony demonstrated that safety is not a procedural measure but a life-saving skill that can be a game-changer when the situation calls for it.

In addition, Tony’s guidance during this life-saving event and his consistent dedication to his role in our organization truly embody our value of Leadership. His quick thinking and life-saving skills exhibit this leadership value to the fullest. His actions are a testament to the kind of leaders we strive to be—those who step up when the situation calls for it and lead the way with courage and determination.

We at Larson-Danielson are immensely proud to call Tony one of our own. His outstanding contributions not only enhance our community but also reflect the essence of our core values.

Tony serves as a shining example of how we can embody leadership and safety in our everyday lives. We are inspired to continue fostering a culture that values safety and promotes leadership, both within our organization and in the communities we serve.

(La Porte, Ind.) – The votes are in, and Larson-Danielson Construction has been named “best commercial construction firm for new construction” and “best commercial construction firm for remodeling or expansion” in Northwest Indiana and Michiana by the readers of the Northwest Indiana Business Magazine.

2022 was an exciting yet challenging year for Larson-Danielson, with several projects completed and awarded to the company.

“While there were many rewarding opportunities for us in 2022, being selected as the general contractor for a new residence hall at the University of Notre Dame was certainly one of the highlights,” said Nick Larson, Vice President at Larson-Danielson. “We’ve been fortunate to have a strong relationship with the University over the years, as well as the subcontractors and suppliers we work with and rely upon when developing our bids. We believe that these relationships, along with the hard work and dedication of our own staff in preparing our proposal, is what led to L-D being awarded this project.”

Larson-Danielson has consistently appeared on the Best of Business Awards list since its inception in 2005. This award reflects the firm’s overall goals and approach to future challenges.

“Although there is certainly no shortage of uncertainty for what lies ahead in 2023, we are focused on capturing the right opportunities that will promote further growth for the company and our employees while making sure we continue to provide the quality construction services we have built our reputation on over the past 115 years,” Larson said. “We are excited to be recognized by Northwest Indiana Business Magazine as the best in our industry, and remain committed to the goal of being the best for many years to come.”

Facet Architecture – Best Commercial Architectural Firm

In addition to Larson-Danielson’s Best of Business awards, Facet Architecture, the firm’s in-house architecture and design firm, earned its first award, “best commercial architectural design firm” in Northwest Indiana. Facet Architecture is a growing commercial architecture firm providing interior design and architecture solutions.

“Facet Architecture has been blessed to work with several clients, on multiple projects, over the years. We designed a 3-story medical office building in Michigan City for HealthLinc, a regional community health center, that will allow for expanded service to their clients and the growing needs of the city. This project is currently under construction and will be completed in early 2024,” said Robin Witte, AIA, Facet Architecture’s lead architect. “Another client, The MAAC Foundation, recently celebrated the expansion of their emergency service training campus through the newly designed and constructed Residential Tactical Village. This new area of the campus focused on creating a realistic residential environment for first responders to train in.”

Facet Architecture faced its share of challenges in 2022. Maintaining the highest levels of communication and a dedication to quality helped the firm overcome each challenge successfully.

“Our clients, frequently, have project deadlines that require a quick pace for building design. Our goal is to design a beautiful and functional building for our clients, within their budget and their required timeline needs,” said Witte. “Facet Architecture was able meet these challenges in 2022 by expanding our workforce and working as a team, with our clients, to meet our shared project goals.”
