Team accepts Excellence in Construction Award

Larson-Danielson Construction was honored with 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards for two outstanding projects: the Grand Reading Room in South Bend, IN, and Drift on Pine in La Porte, IN.

These projects exemplify our commitment to quality, value, and excellence in construction. Here’s a closer look at each of these remarkable achievements.

The Grand Reading Room: A Beacon of Intellectual Pursuit

Our team was the general contractor for the Beth & Lou Holtz Family Grand Reading Room renovation project. The Grand Reading Room is in Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame and took home of the Excellence in Construction Awards in the interior category. The renovated space is now both functional and inspiring, designed to encourage focused intellectual pursuits and collaborative work.

The 20,000-square-foot, two-story space has over 250 table seats for individual study and seating around an enclosed fireplace. A new stairwell connects the first and second floors, improving accessibility and flow.

Furthermore, the Grand Reading Room is bathed in natural light, which creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. A 100-pendant light installation in the new atrium adds to the enchanting ambiance. In addition, walls of windows offer panoramic views of the west campus, including the Basilica spire and the Dome of the Main Building.

We are particularly proud of the Beth & Lou Holtz Family Grand Reading Room renovation. The project showcases our dedication to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Moreover, this iconic space will serve students and faculty for years to come.

We worked closely with university officials, architects, and subcontractor to ensure that every element of the renovation met the high standards of the University of Notre Dame. From the custom millwork to the state-of-the-art lighting, every detail was meticulously planned and executed.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. The Grand Reading Room is more than just a study space; it’s a place where ideas are born and knowledge is shared.

Drift on Pine: A Culinary and Architectural Gem

Drift on Pine showcases our expertise in structural contracting and took home one of the construction awards in the building category. The 8,000-square-foot restaurant was designed by our architectural partner, Facet Architecture.

This three-story restaurant and bar is a vibrant addition to La Porte, IN. Drift on Pine offers a unique dining experience with versatile spaces that cater to various occasions.

The restaurant offers family dining areas that create a welcoming atmosphere for gatherings. Additionally, a large patio with a cozy fire pit is perfect for cool evenings.

Two breathtaking rooftop areas and three distinctive bars offer magnificent views of Pine Lake. Each bar has its own charm.

First, the ground floor bar connects to an outdoor space overlooking Pine Lake. Patrons can enjoy several seating options and easy access to the bar without going inside.

Next, guests 21 and older can visit The Buoy, Drift’s second-floor bar. The Buoy has its own kitchen, outdoor balcony, and weather-resistant patio. When the weather is nice, the lake-facing windows fully open, providing a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

Finally, the rooftop bar offers patio space looking across both Pine Lake North and Pine Lake South. It’s the perfect place to unwind during the warmer months.

Drift on Pine promises an unforgettable experience. So, visit the restaurant to enjoy a meal with family or sip a cocktail with friends.

Larson-Danielson awarded at annual construction banquet

NWIBRT/CAF Awards Banquet ProgramLarson-Danielson Construction Company was honored by the Construction Advancement Foundation (CAF) at the annual CAF/NWIBRT Awards Banquet on May 10. The firm was named the Commercial Contractor of the Year and was given the Commercial Project of the Year award for the Northwest Health – La Porte medical office building, which was completed in 2022.

“We are extremely honored and humbled to receive these prestigious construction awards from the Construction Advancement Foundation,” said Nick Larson, vice president of Larson-Danielson. “The awards serve as a testament to our incredible team and partners, without whom these achievements would not be possible.”

Founded in 1967, CAF is a regional trade organization for the construction industry which includes more than 500 members across Northwest Indiana. Each year, CAF awards companies that have demonstrated excellence in safety, craftsmanship, teamwork, quality, innovation, consideration for the environment, community support, and training. There were five categories of winning contractors, based on the nature of their services.

Commercial Contractor of the Year

The award for Commercial Contractor of the Year went to Larson-Danielson for work on commercial public and private-sector facilities completed in 2022, including:

  • Trailyard, Café and Restaurant – Valparaiso, IN
  • MAAC Foundation, Tactical Village and Training Building – Valparaiso, IN
  • Phoenix Metals, Office Renovations – Hammond, IN
  • Ivy Tech East Chicago, Welding Lab Renovations – East Chicago, IN
  • Hanover Community School Corporation, Hanover Middle School General Trades & Masonry Packages – Cedar Lake, IN
  • City of South Bend, Morris Performing Arts Center Slab Replacement – South Bend, IN
  • New Prairie School Corporation, New Halftime Building – New Carlisle, IN
  • People’s Bank, Banking Center 2nd Floor Renovations – Munster, IN

CAF Commercial Project of the Year

Commercial Project of the Year

CAF also gives Project of the Year awards each year across five categories. Nominees are evaluated based on the contractor’s ability to deliver a quality project within the owner’s budget and schedule while exhibiting a firm commitment to safety.

Larson-Danielson was also awarded the Commercial Project of the Year Award for the Northwest Health – La Porte medical office building. The 45,800 square foot, three-story facility is owned by Catalyst Healthcare Real Estate and was designed by Gresham Smith.

The building is multi-tenant medical facility that took approximately 15 months to complete from beginning to end. Construction began with Geopier foundation stabilization in early December 2020 and foundation construction at the end of December.

Site construction included parking for the public and doctors surrounding the new building, and a remote parking lot for additional hospital employee parking across the street. The building was completed and ready for occupancy to begin by the end of December 2021.

The building features a combination of physician offices and other hospital-based services, and is connected to the hospital on the first and second floors. The project was fully completed, and the hospital officially opened operations in the medical office building in January 2022.
